| NOT BY BREAD ALONE 1999 | ||
| A documentary by Leen van den Berg | ||
| Synopsis | In
former times, the church was the heart of every neighbourhood and every
village. These days many churches are empty. But not the Nassau Church in
Amsterdam's Staatsliedenbuurt, a poor 19th-century urban neighbourhood.
The Nassau Church is doing everything it can to keep its shrinking congregation
while also trying to mean something for the less well-off: ex-psychiatric
patients, drug addicts, illegal immigrants and the homeless.
A lively
portrait of the church in an old urban area that serves both the faithful
and those on the fringe of society. |
